Philippe Sommer
Director of Entrepreneurship Programs
Philippe Sommer is Director of
Entrepreneurship Programs at the Batten Institute. In this role, he
oversees and shapes the full scope of the Institute’s
entrepreneurial programs and activities in the MBA area.
Specifically, Sommer directs the Darden Progressive Incubator and
works with the entrepreneurship and innovation faculty to coordinate
the relationship between the MBA curriculum, field study projects,
and student-focused initiatives, identifying appropriate
opportunities for Darden students to work with start-up companies
and venture capital firms.
Sommer works to expand partnerships
with other UVA constituencies, particularly those involved in
biotech ventures and business start-up activities such as the
Medical School, the Engineering School, and the UVA Patent
Foundation. He also works to raise the visibility of Darden’s
entrepreneurship programs through interactions with alumni, venture
groups, and the Virginia business community.
Sommer came to Charlottesville from New York City, following an
impressive career as both an entrepreneur and a venture capitalist.
He served as president of Alsacia & Sommer, Inc. from 1999 to 2005.
Prior to that, Sommer served as president of Alsacia Venture
Management, Inc. He has held positions as managing director at CIBC/Oppenheimer
Corp., and director of business development for Pfizer, Inc.
Hospital Products Group. Additionally, he has consulting experience
with Booz, Allen, & Hamilton Inc., the Cambridge Research Institute,
Le Tranchage des Bois, and VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America).
He holds an M.B.A. in finance from Columbia University and a B.A. in
Neuropsychology from Amherst College.
