Where are the sales on MLK Jr. Day?

The Charlotte Observer , January 19, 2008
By Nichole Monroe Bell

At a time when retailers slash prices for even the most obscure holiday, consumers might wonder: Why don't stores have Martin Luther King Jr. Day sales?

"The holiday likely hasn't caught on as a big sales day because it still isn't universally observed throughout the country," said Patrick Murphy, professor of marketing and co-director of the Institute for Ethical Business Worldwide at The University of Notre Dame.

Murphy said retailers -- especially those who appeal to African Americans -- are missing out on sales by not using the holiday to promote sales. "The recentness of it may be a factor -- a lot of people remember quite well what happened to Martin Luther King, and it's a painful subject for people," he said.

Business owners should try to determine how much money is enough

Columbus Business First, January 18, 2008
By Beatrice E. Wolper

First and most immediate, ask how much money is enough - enough so you don't have to worry about your future.

As discussed in the book Just Enough, by Harvard Business School faculty members Laura Nash and Howard Stevenson, one has to weigh the importance of specific needs, while calculating what is necessary to have enough left over for tomorrow and anticipate what is enough for the rest of your life.
