Institute's Web-based Business Simulation Brings Ethical Decision Making to Life

In conjunction with the Olsson Center for Applied Ethics, the Institute has developed a Web-based simulation, Turning Gears Inc.©, as part of our commitment to provide leading-edge business ethics curricula and learning tools  for current and future business leaders. The academic version of simulation is now available for purchase and an online demonstration of the product is open for review to the general public.

In the simulation, students take on the role of a product manager in the highly competitive toy industry and make a series of decisions through five integrated case studies based on real business scenarios. Through the process students learn that “ethics” is not a specialized set of issues separate from other business functions – rather ethics  issues are truly embedded in the day-to-day business decisions that managers and executives make. The simulation reinforces that successful companies and executives put business and ethics together every day.

The simulation enhances a school’s ability to equip its students to be tomorrow's leaders by drawing on the insight of today's business executives to actively engage students in:

  • Evaluating and putting into practice various decision making frameworks including: Stakeholder Theory and Shareholder Value Maximization
  • Making decisions based on incomplete information
  • Considering the impact of decision making drivers such as company mission statements, corporate principles, personal values, career aspirations and stakeholder responsibilities.
Unique features of the simulation include:
  • Incorporates content from discussions with Fortune 500 CEOs, corporate executives, academics from several leading schools and MBA students
  • Utilizes an interactive, web-based macromedia flash platform to give students the opportunity to make real-world decisions and understand the financial, social, and ethical consequences of their actions
  • Takes less than one and a half hours to use completely, either individually or in small-teams, in addition to classroom discussion
  • Successfully utilized by over 300 MBA students.
