Peter Debaere

Peter Debaere is a member of the Global Economies and Markets (GEM) area. In addition to teaching the CORE FY GEM course, Peter teaches a SY Elective Managing International Trade and Investment and occasionally a PhD course in international trade.

Peter Debaere is an international economist, with a focus on international trade, multinationals and trade policy. His research has an empirical focus and is cited in graduate and undergraduate textbooks. Peter's work has addressed fundamental questions such as the extent to which trade theories can explain the actual international trade patterns we observe. Peter has also focused on the specific impact of trade policies on trade flows and international prices, as well as on the operations of multinational corporations. His papers have been published in top general interest journals such as Journal of Political Economy and field journals such as the Journal of International Economics.

Before joining the Darden School of Business, Debaere was on the Faculty of the University of Texas, Austin. He also had a stint at the Internatioanl Monetary Fund and a one-year stay at the Institute for the German Economy in Cologne, Germany. Currently Debaere is a Research Affiliate at the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) in London. In addition to giving research talks at seminars and conferences, Peter recently visited the Kiel Institute for the World Economy in Germany and the Leverhulme Centre for Research on Globalisation in the U.K. Peter is also on the advisory board of UVA's Centre for German Studies.
