The UVA Cup: a new, university-wide entrepreneurship concept competition

Imagine the breadth and depth of new venture concepts that can be developed when students collaborate across disciplinary boundaries in the various schools and graduate programs at the university. When environmental scientists talk to architects and city planners about potential new ventures, or nurses vet their ideas for improving patient care and hospital outcomes alongside MBAs.
This November, in the spirit of Thomas Jefferson's "academical village," Darden is organizing UVa's first Entrepreneurial Concept Competition to span multiple schools at the University simultaneously. The way the UVa Cup will work is that individual schools within the University of Virginia will each hold their own concept competitions on site. Darden will continue to hold a concept competition as in previous years. The difference this year is that the winners from Darden's concept competition and the winners from each of the other schools hosting concept competitions of their own will then come together to compete in a cross-university competition called the UVA Cup that will pit winners against winners to decide the ultimate entrepreneurial concept champion of 2009 for the entire University of Virginia.
Entrepreneurial concepts are 2-3 page descriptions of a new venture (for-profit or not-for-profit), including the value proposition, market opportunity, proposed product/service, and management team. Whether you are an artist, a scientist, a business student, a biomedical engineer, or a landscape architect, we encourage you to pitch your favorite new venture idea by following the submission guidelines for your school's Entrepreneurial Concept Competition.

Find the 2009 schedule of Entrepreneurial Concept Competitions at other UVa Schools: altogether, there will be six School competitions, including Darden's, that will take place all across UVA Grounds. The UVA Cup finalists will be determined by Nov. 12.
Finalists for UVA Cup will include the 1st place winner of Darden's Entrepreneurial Concept Competition, Georgi Yanchev. In addition to the cash prizes, there will be a special award unveiled only at the finals of the UVA Cup that will showcase the creativity of a group of UVA students.
