Three Receive Darden Honors

The Darden School of Business held a special First Coffee this morning to announce the 2008-2009 winners of the awards “Friend of Student,” “Outstanding Faculty,” and “Theo Herbert International” and to acknowledge the Second Year tutors.

“First, I want to celebrate the unsung heroes: the Second Year tutors,” said Marsh Pattie, Darden’s director of student affairs, “who help along First Year students out of a spirit of collegiality and camaraderie.”

Pattie paid special thanks to the co-chairs of the “effective, efficient” tutoring program, Second Year students Anand Rao and Akanksha Talya.

Then, for the third time, Professor Yiorgos Allayannis, who teaches finance and capital markets courses, was named “Outstanding Faculty” member of the year.

“His classes are high touch, high tone, and high energy, and you are 100 percent guaranteed to be cold-called every day,” said Second Year student Armin Kakas, who presented the award on behalf of the students.

Carrie Armstrong, a career consulting associate, was awarded “Friend of the Student” for her friendly welcome to Darden’s Career Development Center.

Each year, the Theo Herbert International Award recognizes a student or faculty member who enhances the global contributions of the Darden community. The award honors Theo Herbert, the first international student to graduate from Darden, in 1959. Professor Jay Bourgeois, who teaches strategy and post-merger integration, was named this year’s winner.

Founded in 1955, the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business improves society by developing principled leaders in the world of practical affairs.
