H1N1 (Swine Flu) Guidelines & FAQ

There are no reported cases of H1N1 (swine flu) at the Darden School of Business however, with graduation and other events taking place soon at the School, Darden officials ask that you adhere to the following guidelines:

• If you experience flu-like symptoms---a cough or sore throat and a fever of 100 degrees or more---please contact your health provider. Your health care professional may prescribe anti-viral drugs.
• If you think you have swine flu, avoid the emergency room. You could spread germs to many others there. It is best to contact your physician or seek help at a walk-in clinic.
• If you are experiencing any of the symptoms listed above, in order to prevent spreading illness, it is recommended that you stay home for seven days after your symptoms begin or until you have been symptom-free for 24 hours. Do not come to school or work.

Prevention Tips:

• Wash your hands often. Use soap and water and wash for at least 20 seconds. Alcohol-based gel hand sanitizers are effective, too.
• Do not share drinking cups with other people.
• Avoid touching your eyes, mouth, or nose.
• Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you sneeze.
• Do your best to avoid contact with people who are not feeling well. Influenza is thought to spread person-to-person through coughing or sneezing of infected people.
• Be aware and take good care of yourself.

Why are some primary and secondary schools closing?

Having many children in a relatively closed environment can lead to the swine flu spreading quickly. Most primary and secondary schools that have closed did so to avoid further spreading of the virus.

What are the symptoms of H1N1?

According to the Center for Disease Control, symptoms for H1N1 flu have included fever, headache, upper respiratory tract symptoms (cough, sore throat, rhinorrhea), myalgia, fatigue, vomiting, or diarrhea. Illnesses among persons infected with H1N1 flu virus have mostly been treated at home but some have been hospitalized.

If I choose not to attend Darden’s graduation ceremony is there a way to view it remotely?

Yes. Darden will provide a live video stream of graduation that you can watch from your computer. Click here to view the website.
