A little rain was not about to spoil the afternoon for the Darden School of Business Class of 2009 yesterday.
Graduates from Darden’s full time MBA, the MBA for Executives, and Doctoral programs---a total of 383---received their diplomas on Flagler Court in front of faculty, staff, family, and friends Sunday afternoon. Many of the graduates also took part in the University of Virginia’s graduation ceremony on main grounds Sunday morning.

About 3,000 people attended the Darden event. When a light, and fortunately brief, rain shower began early in the ceremony, some of the guests moved indoors to the classrooms and lounge areas where the event was being shown live on video screens.
Due to the threat of showers, Dean Bob Bruner decided not to give his graduation speech.
“I thought I would help accelerate the proceedings by omitting my remarks,” Bruner said smiling. “Sometimes hearing less from a Dean is a good thing.”

Graduating students Doug Kinard and Tim Oakhill did address the graduates and guests as planned.
As the new alumni walked across the stage to receive their diplomas, the clouds began to break up. By the end of the ceremony, the sun was shining.
Founded in 1955, the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business improves society by developing principled leaders in the world of practical affairs.
