Lenox Named Emerging Scholar

Mike LenoxThe Strategic Management Society has named Darden School of Business Professor Michael Lenox, who is also the executive director of Darden’s Batten Institute, the 2009 SMS Emerging Scholar.

“Lenox was selected from a field of excellent candidates because of his research productivity, contributions to the field and future potential,” stated SMS, which awards the prize annually to a relatively young or new scholar who displays exemplary scholarship in research, education and related academic activities that seek to improve current strategic management practice.

Lenox has published 22 journal articles in top scholarly journals such as the Strategic Management Journal, Academy of Management Journal, Management Science and Organization Science. He serves as an Associate Editor for Management Science and the Journal of Business Venturing and serves, or has served, on the editorial review board for several scholarly journals, including the Strategic Management Journal and Organization Science.

“I have had two primary research streams,” Lenox told SMS. “The first focuses on nonmarket strategies by businesses with an emphasis on environmental issues. In particular, I seek to answer the question—What are incentives for businesses to go beyond the requirements of government?”

“The second dominant research stream deals with technology, strategy and innovation. I am interested in understanding how research and development models have been transformed to the current model of open innovation in which external knowledge is identified and brought into the organization in order to create innovation,” he said.

“Strategy scholars have a lot to say about public policy. And, thus, I expect my research to integrate my interest in business strategy and public policy issues. At the Batten Institute, we focus on how entrepreneurship and innovation can affect broader social issues and policies. My research will fit under this umbrella,” said Lenox.
