“A Random Act of Kindness to Darden’s Luckiest Student” presents the opportunity for one student to receive $17,500 – a full semester’s tuition. The cash gift was donated by an anonymous friend of the School whose motivation was to deliver a random act of kindness. The gift enabled the Darden faculty to create an unusual learning opportunity for students.

Through a process of elimination using purely random devices (such as a simple coin flip used in the finals), Darden will identify a single student from among the First Year class and anoint that individual as Darden’s Luckiest Student. Darden’s luckiest student will get the opportunity to make a crucial choice. Two briefcases will be presented to the student. One will contain a check for $17,500. The other will be empty. Darden’s luckiest student can choose one of the briefcases and hope good fortune smiles on the selection, or the student can accept a guaranteed amount of cash from the “banker” and walk away.
