Darden Jefferson Fellowships
Outstanding SCHOLARS. Outstanding CITIZENS. Outstanding LEADERS.
The Darden Graduate School of Business and the Jefferson Scholars Foundation announce the Darden Jefferson Fellowship. This ambitious endeavor is consistent with Thomas Jefferson’s belief in developing scholars and leaders who would share their talents with the wider world for the common good. Awarded solely on the basis of merit, Darden Jefferson Fellowships are granted to the most exceptional candidates who have applied for admission for the MBA at Darden. In identifying such candidates, judges will seek evidence of ethical leadership, diplomatic decisiveness, and a track record of putting ideas into action, together with a superb record of academic achievement. Once selected, these students will join the unique and distinguished community of PhD, JD, and MFA students whose talents in the areas of leadership, scholarship and citizenship have enriched the life of the University of Virginia.
Fellowship Offer
Each Darden Jefferson Fellow will receive full tuition, fees and living expenses as published in UVA's Graduate Record. Additionally, Fellows will receive a research stipend in each year of their MBA program. In the first year, up to $3,000 will be awarded to defray the cost of the required laptop computer or to support another research-related activity. In the second year, up to $3,000 may be spent to fund a Global Business Experience or costs related to the fellow’s research project (travel to conference, access to special databases, etc.).
Coupled with the financial benefit, a core element of the Darden Jefferson Fellowship is the one-on-one relationship that will be established with a distinguished professor at Darden. Each fellow will be assigned a faculty member as his or her advisor prior to the beginning of the first year of the MBA program, with whom he or she will work closely on an independent research project.
Application Process
Darden Jefferson Fellows will be leaders whose participation in the Darden MBA program will make a difference in the life of the Darden School and the University of Virginia. Candidates interested in being considered for this fellowship should possess superior intelligence and academic excellence, but must also demonstrate leadership, citizenship, integrity and honor. Fellowship candidates will be selected from those applicants who have applied and been offered admission to the Darden MBA program. To be considered for a Darden Jefferson Fellowship, candidates must complete their application to Darden by October 28, 2008.
Finalists selected to compete for a Darden Jefferson Fellowship will be invited to Charlottesville February 19-21 for the Jefferson Fellows Selection Weekend. The schedule will include meetings with Darden faculty and alumni, current Darden students and Jefferson Fellows in residence from the Law School and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences of the University of Virginia. The weekend concludes with an observed case discussion among the finalists and an individual interview.
