Merit Scholarship Consideration
The Darden School provides merit scholarship to second year students on the basis of first year academic performance and service to the community. Scholarship funds come from alumni donations and our endowed scholarships.
Please read the following information carefully. It contains all information and application materials you need to apply for 2009-10 Second Year Darden Financial Aid. Government and University submissions for Federal Loans should be completed by May 14. Second Year Financial Aid Applications and supportive documentation are due no later than Thursday, May 14 at 4:00 p.m. Please return all Darden and University materials and supporting documents to Amanda Mills.
* Late applications will not be accepted – no exceptions.
Federal Financial Aid
In order to renew or file for the guaranteed $20,500 in Federal Stafford Loans, you must file both a FAFSA form and the University of Virginia Application for Financial Aid. Returning graduate students who had Federal Loans this past year should receive a Personal Identification Number (PIN) in the mail from the Department of Education. This was mailed to the address you reported on your 2008-2009 FAFSA. This PIN will allow you to file your renewal FAFSA on the web at www.fafsa.ed.gov. If you have not received your PIN, you may file an original application on-line seeking an original PIN.
In order to qualify for Federal Loans, you must apply using the on-line FAFSA at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/ and file the University of Virginia Financial Aid Application. Both applications should be completed by Thursday, May 14, 2009 for timely handling.
Darden Financial Aid
If you currently hold a merit scholarship and just wish to renew it, you do not need to complete a Second Year application; please fill out a renewal form, available from Amanda Mills. As long as you have maintained satisfactory progress of a B (3.00000) average or better, your scholarship will be renewed.
If you wish to apply for a merit-based scholarship, you must complete the on-line application. Students who were not awarded a scholarship for their first year or who chose not to apply, are eligible to apply for a Darden Second Year scholarship.
Darden Second Year Scholarship Committee
Most Darden School Scholarships and Fellowships unless otherwise noted are awarded by a faculty committee. The Darden Second Year Scholarship Committee is composed of 3 teaching faculty members: Paul Simko, Alan Beckenstein, and June West along with two administrative faculty members: Marsh Pattie, the Director of Student Affairs; and Larry Mueller, the Director of Financial Aid.

Third year MBA/JD students are eligible to apply for a Second Year Darden Scholarship. Your Stafford Federal loan applications should be submitted directly to the Darden Financial Aid Office or the University Office of Financial Aid to Students and not to the Law School.
Financial Aid for Fourth year MBA/JD students is processed through the Law School.
Supplemental (Non-Subsidized) Third Party Loans
Darden students may use supplemental loans to meet the total Darden budget. GradPLUS loans or private student loan programs are available to Darden students. For students interested in searching for available private loans, one source is www.CertifiedPrivateLoans.com. This website allows you to compare private loans from up to ten different lenders. You may also wish to go to www.finaid.org and search for "private student loans."
