Friday, April 04, 2008 THOMAS J. BALTIMORE, RLJ DEVELOPMENTCapacity crowds turned out to learn about Emerging Domestic Markets during the 2008 Darden Black Business Student Forum Conference on April 4.
Emerging Domestic Markets (EDMs) collectively have an estimated purchasing power of $1.3 trillion annually. These markets represent an intriguing opportunity for business leaders. But there is more at stake. EDMs are the very markets that stand to benefit the most from committed business leadership. Students during the conference learned that these markets represent both economic opportunity and the chance to make a difference in the world of practical affairs, which is the essence of the Darden School mission.
The conference speakers during the day were Robert L. Johnson, founder of Black Entertainment Television and Thomas J. Baltimore, Jr., co-founder and president of RLJ Development, which is one of Johnson’s companies. The Honorable Denise L. Nappier, Treasurer of the State of Connecticut, was scheduled to speak that evening.
Mr. Baltimore kicked off the morning session with a discussion of the RLJ private equity funds under his management and the company’s extensive privately-owned real estate holdings. RLJ owns 136 hotels in major markets with a portfolio value of $3 billion. Mr. Baltimore said he has not lost a single member of his executive team. He credited his own success to self-sacrifice, focus and an unwavering dedication to the task.
