Director of Media Relations and Content Strategy

The University of Virginia Darden School Foundation seeks a Director of Media Relations and Content Strategy to join the Office of Communication and Marketing. The role will expand Darden’s reputation as one of the world’s leading business schools by telling the Darden story and identifying, developing and distributing content that meets the School’s mission to improve the world by developing responsible leaders and advancing knowledge.

The successful candidate will oversee a world-class media relations program among top business schools, and serve as a lead spokesperson for the school. As a content strategist, the director will develop Darden’s editorial calendar and write, edit and assign news and feature stories, ensuring that top-quality content is distributed across communication mediums. The successful candidate will have the vision, talent and energy to build on Darden’s legacy of excellence.  

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Collaborates with Darden School leaders and Communication & Marketing team directors to set and execute a vision for communication and marketing-related issues and to ensure maximum, global impact for content from the Darden School.
  • Leads media relations at Darden. Responsible for creating the strategy for news content and developing and distributing newsworthy information, on a global scale. Oversees media relations activities, including press releases; media inquiries, lists and pitches; and media coverage and sponsorships for special events.
  • As a content strategist, identifies and reports the key stories from Darden, mining and lifting newsworthy information from faculty, staff, students and alumni of the three formats of the MBA programs (full-time MBA, MBA for Executives and Global MBA for Executives), Executive Education (custom and open-enrollment programs) and research centers.
  • Develops editorial calendar and style guidelines, ensures consistent messaging and voice, and aligns the School’s content with its mission to develop responsible leaders and advance knowledge.
  • Leverages exceptional writing and editing skills and a keen ability to identify newsworthy topics to develop content for news releases, media events, social media, publications and executive presentations.
  • Supervises the Associate Director of Media Relations, PR agencies and a pool of freelancers.
  • Serves as spokesperson on day-to-day communications issues.
  • Prepares and executes emergency and crisis communication plans for the school.
  • Manages vendor relationships for public relations and editorial support and media tools.  

Successful candidates will have a proven track record that includes:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communication or related field — advanced degree preferred  
  • Minimum 8 years of corporate communications, strategic communications, media relations or journalism
  • Demonstrated experience and deep understanding of strategic media relations management, executive communications and reputation management.

Assistant Director of Marketing, Executive Education 

The University of Virginia Darden School Foundation seeks an Assistant Director of Marketing for Darden Executive Education to join the Office of Communication and Marketing. The role will support the Executive Education marketing team as we attract participants to our short courses, develop interest in our custom solutions and build the Darden brand. We are seeking an organized, creative, and tech-savvy individual with skills in marketing and communication, including written communication and inbound marketing. Anticipated hiring range is $45,000 - $60,000. 

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Collaborate closely with the Executive Education and school marketing teams to design and deliver innovative marketing strategies that differentiate Darden in the marketplace.
  • Design, segment, deploy, track and optimize regular e-mail communication to our database of prospective and current clients. Report analytics to the marketing director and recommend strategic improvements.
  • Manage daily the Executive Education website and collateral, including landing pages, brochures and proposals.
  • Execute Darden Executive Education’s social media strategy across multiple channels and track results.
  • Take ownership of our successful marketing webinar series. Work with a program manager on logistics and scheduling, build registration processes, market and fill the webinar, and track progress in converting leads into revenue.
  • Manage the creation of short marketing videos for the website, working with video production partners.
  • Execute marketing events such as trade shows, including logistics, marketing and tracking.
  • Direct efforts of advertising agency to place advertising accurately and on deadline.

 Successful candidates will have a proven track record that includes:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Journalism or related field
  • 3+ years of hands-on, relevant marketing experience required.
  • Track record of improving marketing performance through innovative marketing strategies.
  • Demonstrated experience executing multi-channel digital campaigns.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and remain cognizant of deadlines and schedules.
  • Strong strategic and analytical problem solving skills with solid project management skills.
  • Demonstrated initiative to improve marketing performance, use innovative marketing strategies and collaborate across departments to improve business results.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Preference for candidates with proficiency in graphic design (InDesign), HTML, Hubspot and Salesforce.

Executive Director, Advancement

The Executive Director will be responsible for developing and implementing strategies to achieve the institutional advancement goals established by the Dean, the Senior Executive Director of the Darden School Foundation and Strategic Relations, and the Foundation Board of Trustees. This position is the primary liaison and point of contact with Central Development at the University. As a lead development officer, the Executive Director is also actively involved in the solicitation of major prospects and large gifts for Darden. 

Successful candidates will have a proven track record that includes:   

  • Ten to twelve years in increasingly responsible management level university fundraising positions or corporate assignment as a managing director in marketing private wealth management or personal banking with a top tier institution
  • Familiarity with financial forecasting and budgetary responsibility
  • Proven fundraising ability in the context of a large campaign, to include: developing and implementing campaign strategy, and managing major gifts, annual giving, corporate and foundation relations, and planned giving programs
  • Superior oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to collaborate and proactively offer strategic and tactical suggestions and direction
  • Ability to develop long-range fundraising plans, goals and objectives and communicate and achieve the objectives with staff
  • Proven leadership, management and training skills to development staff
  • Ability to analyze all fundraising activities and operations; forecast data to achieve progress toward stated goals
  • Bachelors’ degree required, MBA preferred

Managing Director of Program Delivery - Executive Education

The Darden School Foundation at the University of Virginia seeks a Managing Director of Program Delivery to join its Executive Education team. The Managing Director of Program Delivery will report to the Senior Associate Dean of Executive Education and is responsible for managing the program delivery operations for Darden's Executive Education programs. This position works with colleagues and Darden faculty to deploy resources in a manner that supports the strategic growth and highest quality delivery of both custom and open programs. The ideal candidate will develop and maintain collaborative working relationships across finance, faculty, marketing, open enrollment and custom program management. The Managing Director will ensure operational excellence and accountability in managing a staff of 10-15 people, implement a budget and work effectively with various administrative functions at Darden and the University of Virginia. 

Successful candidates will have: 

  •  A demonstrated track record of performance and leadership in running a business or profit center in a professional service or academic environment.    
  •  10+ years of experience, with at least five years managing a $5 million to $10 million organization or business unit. 
  •  Combination of experience in financial management and budget development with ability to reconcile financial activities and capture key data and processes. 
  •  Proven effectiveness managing others, while empowering them to make decisions.  
  •  Experience effectively communicating key data, including presentations to senior management, the Board or other outside partners/influencers/clients. 
  •  Success seeing beyond the numbers, identifying trends and new possibilities. 
  •  Ability to build credible and strong relationships within the Darden enterprise to support well-run program delivery, operations, and financial administration.  
  •  Proven success in effectively evaluating strengths and weaknesses of delivered programs with an objective of continual improvement for client service.  
  •  Excellent communication skills with all levels of management, faculty and business community: written, oral; individual, small groups and formal presentations. 
  •  Working knowledge of leadership development.  Human resources or experience in collaborating with Chief Human Resource Officers, Chief Learning Officers, and/or Chief Financial Officers is preferred.   

A Bachelor's degree is required. Master's degree preferred, ideally in Business Administration, Human Resources Management, or other relevant field. The selected candidate should be willing to travel moderately and work evenings and weekends depending on client needs and deadlines.
