Executive Director, Advancement

The Executive Director will be responsible for developing and implementing strategies to achieve the institutional advancement goals established by the Dean, the Senior Executive Director of the Darden School Foundation and Strategic Relations, and the Foundation Board of Trustees. This position is the primary liaison and point of contact with Central Development at the University. As a lead development officer, the Executive Director is also actively involved in the solicitation of major prospects and large gifts for Darden. 

Successful candidates will have a proven track record that includes:   

  • Ten to twelve years in increasingly responsible management level university fundraising positions or corporate assignment as a managing director in marketing private wealth management or personal banking with a top tier institution
  • Familiarity with financial forecasting and budgetary responsibility
  • Proven fundraising ability in the context of a large campaign, to include: developing and implementing campaign strategy, and managing major gifts, annual giving, corporate and foundation relations, and planned giving programs
  • Superior oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to collaborate and proactively offer strategic and tactical suggestions and direction
  • Ability to develop long-range fundraising plans, goals and objectives and communicate and achieve the objectives with staff
  • Proven leadership, management and training skills to development staff
  • Ability to analyze all fundraising activities and operations; forecast data to achieve progress toward stated goals
  • Bachelors’ degree required, MBA preferred

  Treasurer

The Darden School Foundation at the University of Virginia seeks an experienced professional to join its Finance team. The Treasurer directs the finance, accounting, treasury, external auditing, and internal control functions of the Darden School Foundation. Serves as the Treasurer of the Foundation, having responsibility for all funds received and disbursed and for all records as they relate to the financial transactions of the Foundation. This role will focus on the oversight of the Darden Foundation Finance and Administration (F&A) team and includes planning for the reorganization of the Foundation and School F&A team into a single cohesive unit.  

Working closely with the Assistant Dean for School Finance, responds to requests of the Sr. Associate Dean and Chief Operating Officer and Board of Trustees for various financial projections and analyses, and ensures the prompt and accurate preparation of all required financial reports for the many constituencies of the School and Foundation, including the Dean’s office, Executive Education, Development, the Board of Trustees, the University of Virginia, key donors, IRS, and other regulatory authorities.  

Educational/Experience Requirements: Requires a college degree supplemented by a CPA or advanced degree. Minimum of seven years work experience involving the oversight of accounting and finance, five of which must be in a management capacity. Experience in an executive role at a large, complex, corporation may be substituted for non-profit.    

Skill Requirements: Comprehensive knowledge of GAAP (“Generally Accepted Accounting Principles”), IRS and governmental regulations, and other regulations as they pertain to a non-profit foundation. Considerable experience with budgeting, accounting and investment management.

Development Officer - Annual Fund

The Darden School Foundation at the University of Virginia seeks an experienced professional to join its Advancement team. The Development Officer is responsible for identifying, cultivating, proposing and closing leadership annual gifts of $2,500+ from alumni, friends and organizations for the Darden School. The incumbent works to further the goals of the Darden School by effectively motivating and managing volunteers. 

This position is part of a professional fundraising team that generates philanthropic support for the School. Through these philanthropic efforts, Darden is able to attract the brightest students, support our top-ranked faculty and strengthen Darden’s Centers of Excellence, including a state of the art Innovation Lab that inspires entrepreneurship. 

The successful candidate will have an understanding of philanthropic, sales or business development and a demonstrated ability of individual solicitation success in the corporate, secondary or higher education environment. This position is responsible for identifying, engaging, soliciting and stewarding Darden Society leadership donors and prospects and managing a tiered portfolio of up to 500 prospects and donors. This position travels regularly to visit Darden Society target donors.

Executive Director - Executive Education

The Darden School Foundation at the University of Virginia seeks an Executive Director to join its Executive Education team. Reporting to the Senior Associate Dean of Executive Education, the Executive Director is responsible for managing and growing client relations for Darden's Executive Education programs. This position has profit center responsibility in a complex academic context and is expected to be entrepreneurial in developing resources, identifying potential niches for future programs, pursuing opportunities, closing deals, and building partnerships with a wide array of internal and external stakeholders. The Executive Director will lead the Darden Executive Education team in promoting Darden's brand and reputation among key constituencies and in meeting revenue, growth, and profit targets. This leader will ensure operational excellence and accountability in managing a team of 10-15 people, implement a budget and work effectively with various administrative functions at Darden and the University of Virginia.  

 Successful candidates will have: 

  •  12+ years of experience in sales and marketing in selling high end professional services. 
  •  5+ years of business unit P&L responsibility; specific previous revenue responsibility for $10-20 million in sales. 
  •  5+ years of management experience; preferred experience in managing business development roles 
  •  Proven ability building long-term relationships and negotiating sales at the C-level.   
  •  Ability to plan and develop successful sales campaigns by driving discipline and process.  
  •  A proven track record of sales success in business development, client engagement, management and the ability to manage to deadlines and budgets. 
  •  Ability to conceptualize the academic content in a business school and connect academic concepts with business opportunities for executive education. 
  •  Experience in developing an account management plan, forecasting and managing client revenue and profitability, and negotiating pricing and contract terms. 
  •  Excellent communication skills with all levels of management, faculty and business community: written, oral; individual, small groups and formal presentations. 
  •  Research and market analysis skills across industries with the ability to identify attractive business development opportunities.   

Experience in executive education and knowledge in at least one key sector (finance, aerospace/defense, energy, pharmaceuticals, professional services) is strongly preferred.  

A Bachelor's degree is required. Master's degree preferred, ideally in Business Administration, Human Resources Management, or other relevant field. Frequent travel (up to 50%) may be required. Client engagements may require involvement in weekend and evening activities.

Managing Director of Program Delivery - Executive Education

The Darden School Foundation at the University of Virginia seeks a Managing Director of Program Delivery to join its Executive Education team. The Managing Director of Program Delivery will report to the Senior Associate Dean of Executive Education and is responsible for managing the program delivery operations for Darden's Executive Education programs. This position works with colleagues and Darden faculty to deploy resources in a manner that supports the strategic growth and highest quality delivery of both custom and open programs. The ideal candidate will develop and maintain collaborative working relationships across finance, faculty, marketing, open enrollment and custom program management. The Managing Director will ensure operational excellence and accountability in managing a staff of 10-15 people, implement a budget and work effectively with various administrative functions at Darden and the University of Virginia. 

Successful candidates will have: 

  •  A demonstrated track record of performance and leadership in running a business or profit center in a professional service or academic environment.    
  •  10+ years of experience, with at least five years managing a $5 million to $10 million organization or business unit. 
  •  Combination of experience in financial management and budget development with ability to reconcile financial activities and capture key data and processes. 
  •  Proven effectiveness managing others, while empowering them to make decisions.  
  •  Experience effectively communicating key data, including presentations to senior management, the Board or other outside partners/influencers/clients. 
  •  Success seeing beyond the numbers, identifying trends and new possibilities. 
  •  Ability to build credible and strong relationships within the Darden enterprise to support well-run program delivery, operations, and financial administration.  
  •  Proven success in effectively evaluating strengths and weaknesses of delivered programs with an objective of continual improvement for client service.  
  •  Excellent communication skills with all levels of management, faculty and business community: written, oral; individual, small groups and formal presentations. 
  •  Working knowledge of leadership development.  Human resources or experience in collaborating with Chief Human Resource Officers, Chief Learning Officers, and/or Chief Financial Officers is preferred.   

A Bachelor's degree is required. Master's degree preferred, ideally in Business Administration, Human Resources Management, or other relevant field. The selected candidate should be willing to travel moderately and work evenings and weekends depending on client needs and deadlines.
