Taxis Within Shanghai

Taxis are the most convenient way to get around Shanghai. Always carry a "taxi card", which your hotel will give to you (provided below).  It will list the address and phone number of your hotel in Chinese.  Do not expect drivers to understand spoken English or read the Latin alphabet.  If you want to go anywhere and get back, you must have a taxi card. Tipping your taxi driver is not common practice.  The trip from the airport to the Shanghai Marriott Hotel City Centre will take about an hour and cost approximately ¥200 depending on traffic.

Avoid any taxis with a license plate beginning with the letter 'X.'  These are unlicensed, private taxis and the drivers do not adhere to the code of conduct required for licensed taxis.  In general, you will not encounter these taxis in the main tourist and shopping areas, only in outlying areas. There are many taxi companies in Shanghai.  A quality company is Dazhong Taxis.  They operate light blue/aqua colored cars, with the number 96822 in a splash on the side.  96822 is their phone number, and they have an English-speaking booking service.

It is generally recommended that you have cash while in Shanghai.  The three main banks in China are the Bank of China, Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, and China Construction Bank. They all have ATMs in the Shanghai Pudong Airport so that you can obtain currency when you arrive.  China Construction Bank has a partnership with Bank of America, so if you are a Bank of America account holder, you will have lower ATM fees from China Construction Bank if you notify Bank of America before departure.

Banks within the airport will charge a service charge each transaction of 50RMB. It is recommended that you exchange within the city limits. They do not charge a service fee within the city limits.
