Darden Executive Education Presents at Army Seminar

On July 9, 2009, Tom Cross, Senior Director of Executive Education, participated in a panel discussion on leadership at the Army's "Summer 2009 Future Operational Environment Seminar." The seminar was attended by more than 100 Army leaders assessing how the future operational environment will impact leader development, capabilities and concepts and training. Darden Executive Education Hosts Navy 21st Century Leader Meeting

On August 3, 2009, Darden hosted a meeting of the Navy Executive Learning Office and its academic partners from Darden, UNC, Babson, and the Navy Post Graduate School to discuss the Navy's 21st century leaders. Tom Cross presented an analysis using an analogue of Porter's Five Forces Industry Analysis to derived the key skills that leaders will need to cope with the increasingly challenging strategic landscape. Darden Executive Education Visits Langley Air Force Base

Professor Mark Haskins and Tom Cross visited Langley Air Force Base, Virginia, on October 9, 2009. Mark and Tom learned about the Air Expeditionary Force that supports combat operations deployments, and got up-front looks at the F-22 Raptor and F-15 Eagle fighters. Langley is home to the first Fighter Wing, one of the largest fighter bases in the Air Combat Command, and the 192nd Fighter Wing, an Air National Guard component of the Virginia National Guard.

Air Force Generals Attend Seminar at Darden

A total of 33 Air Force and Office of Secretary of Defense Generals and Senior Executive Service (SES) civilians attended the six-day Enterprise Leadership Seminar at Darden Executive Education October 25-31, 2009. In early 2009, Darden was chosen to provide this executive-level learning forum for Air Force Generals, Colonels, SES and GS-15/PBM civilians and Chief Master Sergeants inbound to strategic Pentagon assignments. The course objectives are for the participants to:

  • Better understand “business” skills in the context of current Air Force issues and the Washington AOR perspective.
  • Discuss current Air Force issues.
  • Expand their network of Air Force leaders.
  • Improve their proficiency in Air Force competencies ­— Enterprise Perspective, Managing Organizations and Resources and Strategic Thinking.
  • Study relevant topics — Strategic Sourcing, Decision-Making, Financial and Risk Management, Ethics, Strategic Human Resource Management, Negotiation and Collaboration Across Organizations and Leading Change.

Darden Executive Education Visits Nellis and Creech Air Force Bases

On December 2-3, 2009, Tom Cross visited Nellis and Creech Air Force Bases in Las Vegas, NV. Highlights of the trip were watching a training exercise for Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) and close-up looks at the MQ-1 Predator and MQ-9 Reaper RPAs at Creech. Nellis is the home of the 98th Range Wing, the world's largest test range.
