Terry S. de Guzman is a seasoned executive who has moved on to the role of Coach and Consultant. Capitalizing on her 30+ years of a successful career in corporate and education, Terry integrates the lessons she learned from the challenges of work-life balance and transitions. Her consulting and coaching practice The Next Step is focused on assisting her clients clearly define their objectives, co-designing a process for discovery and accountability, and implementing a plan of action to achieve sustainable results.
Prior to founding The Next Step, Terry served as Senior Associate Dean for Finance and Administration at the Darden Business School at the University of Virginia. She was responsible for the School’s finance, technology, human resources, facilities, legal, library and case collections functions. During her tenure, Terry led efforts to strengthen the School’s financial capabilities, improve human resources practices, and upgrade Darden’s technological and physical facilities. Her contributions to Darden include developing its international student loan offerings, organizing the community learning team; initiating staff financial literacy courses; introducing sustainability practices, and sponsoring the Darden art project. She continues to teach global leadership at Darden.
Terry’s corporate career started in New York, where she joined American Express as a senior accountant, rising to the position of Manager. She moved on to Kwasha Lipton, a prestigious benefits consulting partnership, where she became a Principal and Controller/Treasurer. Her next move was to Bellcore, as division CFO, and member of the core team on its sale to SAIC. Post-sale, Bellcore became Telcordia Technologies, and Terry was tapped to run the newly formed company’s global mergers and acquisitions activities. She then made a successful transition to education to become COO at the Ethical Culture Fieldston School in New York, where she also led the financing and construction of the school’s campus expansion.
Her executive and leadership experience covers finance, human resources, facilities and technology, and her leadership legacy is to inspire others to lead from where they are, in their careers and their lives. Terry’s life has been defined by her commitment to achieve a sustainable and fulfilling life, advocating balance and financial literacy as a means to this end.
A Certified Leadership Coach, Terry is a CPA and holds an MBA from New York University's Stern School of Business. She lives in Charlottesville, Virginia with her husband, Allen. They have two grown children, Alexandra and Philip. Terry presently serves on the Boards of the Piedmont Virginia Community College Education Foundation and the International School of Charlottesville.
