Biography

The research and work of Erika Hayes James, PhD began in the field of Organizational Psychology and now intersects at Executive Leadership.  She addresses three challenges that global organizations face:
 
•    Crisis Leadershipbeing prepared for, managing through, and learning from crisis
•    Women in Leadershipgender equity at executive levels, and women emerging in leadership
•    The Commuteprofessional couples in commuter marriages and how it relates to talent acquisition and retention

Dr. James teaches, speaks, and consults on various topics surrounding Executive Leadership, and she is a leader in her own right.  In November 2012 Erika James was named the new Senior Associate Dean for the Darden School of Business, University of Virginia, Executive Education program.  

As a member of Darden's Executive Education faculty, ranked #1 by the Financial Times, 2004-2011, Erika produced a unique new offering in 2010 called TheWomen's Leadership Program, given at the Darden School and across the globe in Dubai. The custom and open-enrollment programs deliver innovative, experiential learning with real-world insights to help solve global organizations' toughest business challenges.

In addition, she pioneered a new position at Darden in 2008Associate Dean of Diversity, in order to create a more diverse and inclusive environment for faculty, students, and staff.  Her successors are keeping this position alive, impactful, and current.

Dr. James earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology at Pomona College, a private liberal arts college in Claremont, California.  Her Master of Arts degree in Organizational Psychology was received from the University of Michigan, where she also earned her Ph.D. in Organizational Psychology. The topic of her dissertation is still current and relevant, "It's not what you know, it's who you know: effects of human and social capital on promotion and support."

An engaging and captivating teaching style has earned Erika accolades from the MBA students she has impacted at two of the top-ranked business schools in the world: The Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia, and as a visiting professor at Harvard Business School at Harvard University.

She has authored numerous paper and multi-media case studies, published in notable academic journals, and speaks at academic and professional conferences on her topics of research.
