Second Year Coaches

A unique feature of Darden’s career development offerings is the Second Year (SY) Coaches program. In addition to being assigned a professional, functionally-aligned career advisor, all First Year (FY) students are assigned a SY coach based on the following industry categories:

  • Consulting
  • Corporate Finance
  • Entrepreneurship and Venture Capital
  • General Management
  • Investment Banking
  • Investment Management
  • Marketing
  • Mission Driven
  • Sales and Trading
  • Technology

Benefits for First Year Students

The SY coaches work with FY students to identify their strengths, career goals, and interests and to develop a plan to get a summer internship. This relationship provides FY students with the following support:

  • An accessible contact who is informed, has recent experience going through the same process, and is willing and able to assist in all aspects of the career search
  • Résumé and cover letter advice and editing
  • Industry knowledge
  • Recruiting process and strategies
  • Networking advice
  • Mock interviews including common questions, industry-specific format and feedback

FY students typically meet with their SY coach every two weeks, but this can occur more or less frequently, depending on the needs of the students.

Benefits for Second Year Students

The SY Coaches program is a great leadership opportunity for Darden students. At the end of the First Year, students can apply to be a part of the 3-credit SY Coaches course, which is designed to prepare students to successfully meet the challenges of providing career counseling and direction by mentoring several FY students. SY coaches will study, practice and reflect upon all aspects of coaching, mentoring and counseling that fall within the scope of managerial responsibilities common to MBAs at various leadership levels. Skills learned and practiced include but are not limited to:

  • Evaluating career objectives as they relate to various career paths and goals
  • Targeting skills and experiences to various job environments
  • Giving feedback to professionals from a wide variety of backgrounds
  • Communicating and presenting job search ideals in an effective and timely manner
  • Influencing others to change, grow and excel in the job search process
  • Reviewing résumés and cover letters for clarity and relevance
  • Conducting mock interviews and helping with interview preparation
  • Leading small groups through specific career management topics
  • Managing time to meet counseling objectives
  • Presenting and assisting with Career Management sessions and workshops
