Tell Us Your Why: Carlos Bortoni on His Passion to Improve Education

Carlos Bortoni (MBA '19) started work to reform Mexico’s education system before he had even graduated middle school, then turned his attention to helping underrepresented minorities gain access to better educational opportunities as an undergraduate at Harvard. He came to Darden with a passion to improve education, especially for those who need it most, and at Darden he’s learning how to turn his purpose into a career.

Perfect Set: Darden Sets up Former Russian Volleyball Pro for Future in Business

Ruslan Askerov (Class of 2020) achieved success by any measure before enrolling at the School, playing professional volleyball in Russia and growing a successful business as an entrepreneur in his home country. Now immersed in Darden, Askerov is learning a new set of skills to prepare as a future leader off the court.

A variety of Darden student organizations focus specifically on global issues. These organizations provide an opportunity for students to connect with other members of the Darden community who share similar interests in global business affairs. Activities of the student-run clubs include organizing conferences, sponsoring speakers and planning extracurricular events that highlight foreign cultures and economies. Global Academic Opportunities

Darden offers a variety of global academic opportunities,including exchange programs, for-credit experiential consulting projects and Global Business Experiences, international weeklong courses held that enable students to explore international business issues in countries outside of the United States.

The Charlottesville Community

The Office of Student Affairs directs an orientation program for incoming international students to cover important details about living and studying in the United States and to help with relocation. The Darden Partners Association (DPA) also offers support and social activities to make families feel welcome during their time in Charlottesville.

Recently ranked as the best place to live in the United States by USA Today, Charlottesville offers the amenities of a large city while maintaining the aesthetic charm of a small town that is comfortable, friendly and easy to navigate. The city’s central East Coast location makes it easily accessible to other major cities such as Washington, D.C., and New York.
