    Driver’s License

    • New residents must obtain a Virginia’s driver’s license within 60 days of moving to Virginia. Students who hold a valid driver’s license from another US state or territory, Canadian province, France, Germany, Japan, Taiwan or South Korea have different eligibility requirements than those who hold a valid driver’s license issues from a country outside of those listed above. Please review the DMV website for details on eligibility for obtaining your license.
    • While some students arrive with an International Driver’s Permit (IDP) in the US, it is highly recommended to obtain your Virginia driver’s license as soon as possible. Your Virginia driver’s license is very useful as a form of photo ID to verify your age, date of birth and residency which means you do not need to carry your passport with you.
    • For many new incoming students, you will have to pass a vision screening test, two-part knowledge exam and road skills test. For the road skills test, you will need to provide your own car, which can be a rental car or a friend’s car. While preparing for your documents for your license you must have one proof of identity (such as your valid passport and visa documentation), your valid driver’s license from your home country and two proofs of Virginia residency (for example, rental/lease agreement and piece of postmarked mail displaying your name and address).
    • Details on how and where to apply for your Virginia driver’s license can be found on their website: Virginia DMV
    • Details on how and where to apply for your Maryland driver’s license can be found on their website: Maryland DMV
    • Details on how and where to apply for your Washington, DC driver’s license can be found on their website: Washington, DC DMV
