Healthcare at UVA and in the Charlottesville Community

Per guidance from the University of Virginia, all students that are charged the full comprehensive fees with their tuition are required to have health insurance coverage. Between 15 July and 29 August, students must either:

  • Enroll in the UVA Student Health Plan
  • Submit proof of current health insurance coverage that is comparable to the UVA Student Health Plan and thereby waive the student health insurance option.

The student health insurance plan is offered through United Healthcare. Coverage begins 1 August and runs through 31 July of the next year. The annual premium is around $4,000 for an individual student. Dependent coverage is also available to all eligible students that enroll in the student health plan during the time period above or with a qualifying life event such as marriage or birth.

Students will also receive a notification in SIS (“to do”) regarding the health insurance requirement. Please note that you will be charged for United Student Health Insurance if you do not get a waiver.

As an international student, you can learn about what it means to obtain comparable coverage, if you choose not to pursue the United Student Health Plan. All international students are required to maintain adequate health insurance for their spouse and all dependents throughout their presence in the U.S., while affiliated with UVA.

The student health and wellness building is located at 550 Brandon Ave. Appointments are open from 8 am to 5 pm during the school year, and 8 am to 4:30 pm during the summer. Please note the instructions for parking, taking the bus, or walking.

An FAQ for service charges can be found here

Please note that visiting an out-of-network provider may result in additional out-of-pocket costs.

  • Use your UVA (e.g. slw3n) e-mail address when logging in.
  • If you are trying to access Psychiatry, you’ll need a code that will be provided by either a TimelyCare or CAPS counselor after speaking with that person.
  • If you are having technical difficulties with the site or app, call +1-833-484-6359.
