The Olsson Center for Applied Ethics is home to many internationally known thought leaders in the field of business ethics. Our faculty, fellows and staff regularly produce publications, conferences and other initiatives to advance the practice and theory of business ethics on a global level.   • Faculty

    Andrew C. Wicks
    Olsson Center Director Andrew C. Wicks is the Ruffin Professor of Business Administration and is director of the doctoral program at Darden. Wicks joined the Darden faculty in 2002 after spending the previous 10 years teaching business ethics at the University of Washington Foster School of Business. He has written widely on stakeholder theory, trust, accounting ethics and managed care. His articles have appeared in a range of top journals in business ethics, management and the humanities.

    R. Edward Freeman
    R. Edward Freeman, Elis and Signe Olsson Professor of Business Administration, University Professor and senior fellow of the Olsson Center, is an internationally recognized authority on stakeholder management. Freeman has received numerous awards in recognition of outstanding teaching at Wharton, Minnesota and Darden. He is a past president of the Society for Business Ethics. His massive open online course, “New Models of Business in Society,” was taken by tens of thousands of people around the globe.

    Jared Harris
    Associate Professor of Business Administration Jared Harris is a senior fellow of the Olsson Center. He teaches both ethics and strategy courses in Darden’s MBA program and a doctoral seminar on corporate governance and ethics. His research centers on the interplay between ethics and strategy, with a particular focus on the topics of corporate governance, business ethics and trust.

    Alexander B. Horniman
    Killgallon Ohio Art Professor of Business Administration Alexander B. Horniman, a senior fellow of the Olsson Center, teaches in the area of strategy, leadership and change with additional interests in managerial psychology, diversity and applied ethics. He served as the first director of the Olsson Center and continues to give ethics seminars in public, corporate and association groups.

    Bidhan L. Parmar 
    Bidhan Parmar is an assistant professor of business administration and a senior fellow of the Olsson Center. His research interests focus on how managers make decisions and collaborate in uncertain and changing environments to create value for stakeholders. His recent research examines the impact of authority on moral decision-making in organizations. Parmar’s work has been published in Organization Science and the Journal of Business Ethics among others.


    Collaborations With Other Faculty at the University of Virginia

    The Olsson Center collaborates with a multidisciplinary group of senior faculty in a university-wide working group on ethics. The center works with Institute for Practical Ethics Director James Childress, the John Allen Hollingsworth Professor of Ethics and professor of medical education.

    Olsson Center Senior Fellows are committed to the ongoing challenge of integrating ethical thinking into business decision-making.     Jenny Mead is the senior researcher and case writer at the Olsson Center, where she has written over 300 business ethics cases, teaching notes and technical notes. Mead is the producer and director of the documentaries Obedience: New Insights and Leadership & Theater: Ethics, Innovation and Creativity, and is a playwright herself.
