Alex Velez is a globally recognized data communication expert, trainer, and published author, bringing a rare blend of deep technical skills and pedagogical excellence to the classroom. She is currently a member of the Storytelling with Data creative team. She is co-author of Storytelling with Data: Before and After, Practical Makeovers for Powerful Data Stories (Wiley 2025).

Velez’s business experience began as a database engineer for Moody’s Analytics and lead analyst and SQL developer for Petplan Insurance. In these roles, she successfully bridged highly technical teams with senior executives in finance and pharmaceutical settings, proving her ability to make complex analytical concepts accessible and actionable.

Since 2019, she has been a data storyteller with Storytelling with Data.  Velez regularly facilitates interactive workshops, office hours, and webinars to help adult learners with varying backgrounds improve their data visualization, storytelling, and presentation skills.  In her consulting, she redesigns real-world visualizations, reports, and presentations for HR, pharmaceutical, technology, market research, and financial organizations using Excel, PowerPoint, Data Wrapper, and Tableau.  Her responsibilities also include managing and starring on Storytelling with Data’s YouTube channel, growing the subscriber base from 5K to 21K in two years, and winning the 2022 Most Helpful Data Visualization channel.

Outside of work, Velez enjoys Latin dance and spends her extra time in the kitchen and collecting new cookbooks.
