Education: M.Sc. & Ph.D., Karlsruhe Institute of Technology

Dr. Michael R. Berthold, along with being the Bodily Bicentennial Professor of Analytics at the Darden School of Business, is a computer scientist, academic, and entrepreneur whose work bridges advanced machine learning research and enterprise data analytics applications. He is the co-founder of KNIME, the widely used open-source analytics and data science platform, where he served as President and CEO. He also holds a faculty appointment as Professor and Chair of Information Mining at the University of Konstanz, Germany, as well as an Honorary Professorship at Óbuda University in Budapest.

Dr. Berthold’s research focuses on enabling interactive, human-in-the-loop analysis of large, complex data repositories. His groundbreaking work spans fuzzy modeling, widened machine learning algorithms, visual design patterns for data science, and bisociative knowledge discovery—a paradigm centered on discovering novel cross-domain connections to spur creative insights. Prior to his current academic and corporate roles, he held research and teaching appointments at the University of California, Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon University, and in industrial research settings.

A recognized leader in the global computational intelligence and data mining communities, Dr. Berthold has served as President of the IEEE Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society and the North American Fuzzy Information Processing Society (NAFIPS). He is an IEEE Fellow and a recipient of the NAFIPS K.S. Fu Award for outstanding contributions to fuzzy logic and intelligent systems.
