John L. Colley Jr., The John L. Colley Jr. Professor of Business Administration, has significant skills and experience in corporate governance and strategy and operations planning and control. He taught these subjects in the MBA program.
Professor Colley is the author of 15 books and more than 330 Darden case studies and other teaching materials. He is an authority on the subject of scheduling, including job shop scheduling, process scheduling (sequencing), project scheduling (critical path scheduling) and assembly line balancing. He pioneered in the application of quantitative tools and techniques to the tasks of the general manager.
He has served as a director of a number of companies: including public and private and for-profit and not-for-profit companies. As a director of Avid Medical Inc., he helped orchestrate the growth of the firm from revenues of $2 million to $140 million per year over an 11 year span. Colley was also a former long-time director and chair of the board of Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Virginia (now Anthem Inc.).
Colley served as the substitute trustee for the sale of an ESOP company and as the sole substitute trustee of another ESOP company after the regular trustees were forced to resign when two of the trustees made a hostile bid to take over the company. The company was sold and the proceeds were distributed to the shareholders (employees in the case of an ESOP).
Professor Colley joined the Darden faculty in 1967 after serving as chief of operations and systems analysis for the Hughes Aircraft Company.
Professor Colley was the recipient of the 2010 Thomas Jefferson Award, the University of Virginia's Highest Award. In 2011, he was selected to live in the upstairs apartment in Pavilion VIII on the University of Virginia's prestigious Lawn.
